The City Tarot was something I dreamed about for years. I envisioned a tarot deck that would incorporate photographic images to depict the cards. A modern twist using streets and urban imagery to help tell their story and yours.
A Little History: Tarot cards in their original incarnation were used as a game similar to the game of bridge. It was in 1791 that Jean-Baptist Alliette use the cards as a form of divination publishing a book and a deck. His interpretations are believed to stem from various sources with a strong influence from the Book of Toth (The Egyptian God of Wisdom) His use of both the upright and reversed interpretations is still a widely used method to read the cards. Also relevant is the position in the spread as well as the cards surrounding it.
They next made an appearance in 1909 in the form of the Rider-Waite deck. One of the most recognized deck, it is named after the publisher William Rider and tarot reader A.E Waite.
Since then there have been thousands of interpretations and illustrations for the traditional tarot deck of 78 cards. It has also opened the door to other forms of divination using parts of the traditional deck to create other forms.
My City Tarot uses the traditional format of 78 cards divided into 22 Marjor Arcana and 56 Minor Arcana. The Minor Arcana is then divided into 4 sub-sections representing the four Elements Earth (Coins) Air (Swords) Fire (Wands) and Water (Cups). Each one tells their own story (cycle) and as a whole. An example an idea (swords) will only come to fruition with the ground work (coins) the passion and energy to push through (wands) and the heart to keep you going (cups)
I hope you find them insightful however you choose to use them.
